9th Meeting of Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee held

Karachi Nov 30: The ninth meeting of the Indus Ecoregion Steering Committee (IESC) held on November 30, 2010 at the Planning & Development Department, Government of Sindh. The Additional Chief Secretary, Planning & Development Government of Sindh Mr. Mohammad Ishaque Lashari chaired the meeting. He appreciated the efforts made by the Indus for All Programme in multiple sectors including natural resource management, livelihood improvement, and alternate energy and assured full support of Government of Sindh to the Programme. He emphasized the need to promote indigenous species of trees instead of invasive specie such as eucalyptus.

The Team Leader Indus for All Programme, Mr. Rab Nawaz briefed the meeting on background of Indus for All Programme being implemented in four sites including Keti Bunder, Keenjhar, Chotiari and Pai in partnership with key stakeholders. He highlighted principles of eco region based conservation, context of Indus for All Programme, design stages of the programme, and implementation mechanism.

The meeting was briefed about the major achievements of Indus for All Programme. The Programme Coordinator Mr. Nasir Ali Panhwar, while briefing said that Sindh Wildife Ordinance 1972 has been revised through consultative process and would be sent to law department for further process. It was informed that rehabilitation of hog deer habitat in Pai Forest has been initiated, while 35 livestock model farms in villages around Pai Forest has been established. Solar and wind energy is being promoted in four Programme sites, whereas rehabilitation of mangroves in Keti Bunder is also undertaken. In Chotiari, range land management model has been established and drip irrigation has been installed. Various interventions including information technology centre at Jhimpir, cotton ginning machine at Chotiari, poultry farming, Jetti, provision of ice box, boats and engines at Keti Bunder have been carried out under livelihood development plans. He said that socio-economic and ecological baseline studies have been initiated for phase II of the Programme. Manger Monitoring and Evaluation Mr. Shahid Panhwar shared the major features of 2011 work plan.

Secretary Forest and Wildlife Mr. Mushtaque Ali Memon, Secretary Environment and Alternate Energy Department Mr. Mir Hussain Ali, Special Secretary Finance Mr. Najam ul Saqib Siddiqi Senior Chief Water and Drainage Planning and Development Mr. Fazal Ahmed Nizamani, DCO Thatta Mr. Jaffar Abbasi, Director Coastal Programme IUCN Mr. Tahir Qureshi, Regional Director Shirkat Gah Ms. Tabasum Afzal representative of Coastal Development Authority, representatives of Secretary Agriculture and Fisheries, representatives of two DCOs, , Manager Policy Khadija Zaheer and others attended the meeting.
